Tagging Triple Tail – For Science & Fun

Triple Tail fishing in the Tampa Bay is the best it has ever been! This week, Rebecca and I headed out of Bradenton Florida and fished the surrounding waters in hopes to catch and tag Triple Tail. I have been working with the University of Southern Mississippi for a little over a decade, helping them with migration and growth studies on these fish. We only had five tags, so our mission was to catch, release and tag five fish. We ended up catching and tagging five but saw lots of other Triple Tail.

This has been a record year for Triple Tail on my charters and I have never seen this many fish so early in the season. They are highly migratory, but usually start showing up around October when all the crab traps are on the beach, although late summer in the upper Tampa Bay has always been a favorite time of the year for me to fish for them. I always keep tags on the boat for Triple Tail and Cobia, so if you’re looking for a hard fight, great table fare or would like to contribute to the conservation and research for a species that may be my all time favorite fish to target, get a hold of me here!
